A Calcium Reactor is the most simplistic solution for maintaining calcium and alkalinity in your reef aquarium, and requires minimal up keeping. In a Calcium Reactors most basic form, it is simply a chamber filled with calcium carbonate media and a constant supply of CO2. Aquarium water is passed over the media mixing with the CO2, which is the dissolvent for the media. Adding carbon dioxide to your reef aquarium lowers the pH of the water acting as a buffer. Lowering the pH makes the water more acidic which aids in dissolving the calcium carbonate to provide your reef aquarium with calcium and alkalinity.
