A Protein Skimmer is used to remove dissolved organic compounds from aquarium water, improving the quality of the water.  It is one of the most important parts of your filtration system. A protein skimmer is designed in various styles, in a tube or tower design which has a collection cup on the top of the unit or a water return hose. The skimmer operates by injecting immense, super fine air bubbles into the chamber by the pressure of an air stone or water pump. The air bubbles raise in the chamber thus dissolved organic compounds to stick to the bubbles, rise to the surface and enter the collection cup and are discarded of.
